Happiness Boosting Smoothie

One of the things I love about doing a Juice Cleanse is how happy I feel (after that first withdrawal day is over!)

The foods we eat have a huge effect on how we feel throughout the day, and a diet filled with processed food makes us feel sluggish and irritable after the sugar high has worn off. 

Depression levels are at an All Time High affecting more than 300 million people Worldwide. It’s now been proven by a Study done in the UK that people who eat more fruit and veggies have a higher level of Health and Well Being.

Vitamin C, B, Magnesium, Omega 3’s, Potassium and Folate are all Happiness Boosting Nutrients and we can Boost our Mood by eating more of them. Studies have shown that deficiencies in Zinc, Magnesium and B6 can result in Depression, and around half of the population in the US are Deficient.

Here are my favourite Happiness Boosting Foods:

Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are full of Brain and Mood Boosting Omega 3s and are the edible seeds of a plant in the Mint Family. They are Nutrient Dense and a rich source of Thiamine and Niacin, and a good source of Riboflavin and Folate. They are extremely rich in Minerals such as Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus and Zinc. They contain important Fatty Acids like Linoleic Acid and are a good source of Protein and Essential Fats.

Spinach

Spinach is a Rich Source of Vitamins A, C and K, and Manganese and Iron. It contains the Happiness Boosting Nutrients – Folate, Magnesium, and B Vitamins, and Mood Boosting Flavanols.

Walnuts

Walnuts contain Neuroprotective Chemicals and Mood Boosting Omega 3s. They are rich in B Vitamins – B6, Thiamine, Folate and are good sources of Riboflavin. Walnuts are Extremely High in Manganese and a Rich Source of Magnesium, Phosphorus, Iron and Zinc. This Study shows the link between Zinc Deficiency and Depression.

Blueberries

Blueberries contain important Nutrients and Powerful Antioxidants which Studies show reduce the risk of developing Depression. They are also a good source of Vitamins K, C and Manganese.

Bananas

Bananas are full of Potassium which has a Positive Effect on mood. They contain Tryptophan and B6 which converts to Seratonin – the Happiness Boosting Hormone.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a True Superfood and is Extremely Nutrient Dense. This Study shows how Sprilulina is an Effective Supplement for treating Depression and Anxiety.

I like to include these foods in my Smoothies, because who doesn’t need an Extra Dose of Happiness? ✨

Here’s how to make my Happiness Boosting Smoothie Recipe:

For this recipe you will need:

1 cup of unsweetened almond milk 
1/2 tsp spirulina
handful of spinach
2-3 walnuts (unsalted)
1/2 banana
handful of frozen blueberries
1 tsp chia seeds 

To make it:


Blend everything for 10-15 seconds until smooth. Pour over ice and enjoy!

Additional Time: 1 minute
Total Time: 3 minutes

Ingredients
